Engineer, Tutor, Would-Be Assassin: How Brainwashing Turned a Quiet Man Into a Shooter
Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old Caltech graduate, traveled cross-country to assassinate President Trump at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Federal prosecutors charged him Monday, revealing a months-long plot fueled by radical ideological indoctrination.
Cole Tomas Allen wrote in his manifesto that he was "no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes" — a chilling declaration from a 31-year-old Caltech graduate who crossed the country by train to shoot his way toward the White House Correspondents' Dinner ballroom.
Federal prosecutors charged Allen Monday with attempt to assassinate the President of the United States. The indictment exposes a months-long plot that reveals how societal brainwashing through hostile media and radical activism transforms ordinary Americans into would-be assassins.
Allen's attack demonstrates systematic ideological indoctrination, not spontaneous rage. The Torrance, California, native faces three federal counts including attempted assassination, which carries a maximum life sentence. He signed his manifesto as "Cole 'coldForce' 'Friendly Federal Assassin' Allen," a window into the radical mindset that media-fed hatred and activist networks cultivated in an otherwise quiet teacher and former NASA researcher.
The evidence of premeditation is overwhelming. Allen reserved a room at the Washington Hilton on April 6 for the April 24-26 stay. He traveled by Amtrak from Los Angeles to Chicago on April 21, arriving April 23 before continuing to Washington, D.C. He checked into the Washington Hilton around 3 p.m. on April 24.
His weapons accumulation began years earlier. Allen purchased a .38 caliber semi-automatic pistol on Oct. 6, 2023, and a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun on Aug. 17, 2025. Both came through legal California purchases with cleared background checks.
At approximately 8:40 p.m. on April 25, Allen ran through a Terrace Level security checkpoint magnetometer holding the shotgun. Secret Service officer V.G. was struck once in the chest but protected by a ballistic vest. The officer returned fire while other agents tackled Allen within seconds.
Allen suffered a minor knee injury from the tackle but was not hit by gunfire. Agents recovered the shotgun, .38 caliber pistol, and multiple knives. Five to eight shots were fired during the confrontation.
The 1,052-word manifesto arrived via scheduled email to family members and a former employer approximately 10 minutes before the attack. It outlines "rules of engagement" and explicitly identifies administration officials as "targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest."
Targets included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. "I experience rage thinking about everything this administration has done," Allen wrote.
He rebutted Christian objections by claiming "Turning the other cheek when someone else is oppressed is not Christian behavior; it is complicity in the oppressor's crimes."
Allen's political and social background reveals immersion in radical anti-Trump ecosystems. He donated $25 to ActBlue for Kamala Harris's presidential campaign in October 2024. He reportedly belonged to "The Wide Awakes," a loosely organized progressive collective, and attended "No Kings" anti-Trump protests in California.
His Bluesky account contained over 1,000 posts critical of Trump and Republicans. His sister told investigators that Allen frequently made radical statements and referenced a plan to do "something" to fix the world.
The Secret Service response proved heroic and effective. Deputy Director Matthew Quinn stated: "A coward attempted to create a national tragedy. He underestimated the protective capabilities of the U.S. Secret Service, and was stopped at first contact. The strength of our layered security posture was evident, with a myriad of countermeasures still ahead."
Retired Secret Service Agent Patrick Sullivan explained: "The attacker was stopped before he got into the secure area. We have three levels of security with the outer perimeter, the middle perimeter and the inner perimeter. Checkpoint attacks are always done repeatedly."
This marks the fourth apparent attempt on President Trump's life in less than two years. The pattern includes the July 2024 Butler, Pennsylvania, rally shooting where a gunman's bullet grazed Trump's ear. The September 2024 West Palm Beach golf course ambush was foiled by Secret Service. A February 2026 Mar-a-Lago incident saw a 21-year-old man walk into the secure perimeter with a gasoline container and shotgun.
Each attempt has grown more brazen, culminating in Allen's direct assault at a major public event.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche declared: "Cole Allen now faces the full weight of federal justice. This alleged assassin was stopped because of the courage and professionalism of law enforcement officers who responded without hesitation by doing their jobs. Because of them, the President of the United States, administration officials and all attendees at the dinner were safe. Make no mistake: deranged attacks on our elected officials will never go unpunished."
FBI Director Kash Patel stated: "The evidence is abundantly clear: Cole Tomas Allen traveled to Washington D.C. for the purpose of assassinating President Trump and targeting members of the Trump administration. Thanks to the heroic actions of our brave law enforcement partners who acted quickly and professionally, Allen did not succeed — and now, he will be held fully accountable."
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro added: "Cole Allen traveled across the country with deadly weapons and a plan to assassinate the President of the United States. The swift and courageous response of the Secret Service officers prevented unimaginable tragedy. There is no room in this city for political violence."
Blanche suggested that media coverage contributed to the radicalization process. "When you have reporters and when you have media just being overly critical and calling the president horrible names for no reason without evidence, without proof, it shouldn't surprise us that this type of rhetoric takes place," he told the Washington Times.
Those who knew Allen expressed shock at the contrast between his public persona and private radicalization. Bin Tang, a computer science professor at Cal State Dominguez Hills where Allen earned a master's degree, said: "He was a very good student indeed, always sitting in the first row of my class, paying attention, and frequently emailing me with coursework questions. Soft-spoken, very polite, a good fellow. I am very shocked to see the news."
A former volleyball teammate described Allen as "probably the most gentle person on the team, which makes it even more shocking that he did this. He was really, really smart." Allen had been named Teacher of the Month in December 2024 at C2 Education, a tutoring service where he worked part-time.
The pattern raises profound questions about what in American media, educational institutions, and activist movements produces citizens who conclude that killing the president is a righteous duty. Allen's transformation from quiet Caltech graduate to would-be presidential assassin demonstrates how systematic ideological indoctrination operates unseen until violence erupts.
